Perils of Artificial Intelligence in Cars

Artificial Intelligence or ‘AI’ is the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks of intelligent beings (Copeland, 2018). Artificial Intelligence has gained popularity in the automobile industry introducing driverless and self-driving cars as well as virtual assistants in the car. The development of AI has progressed and now driverless autos have turned into a reality.

Most self-driving cars have a Global Positioning System, GPS unit and a scope of sensors. These enable the auto to construct a guide and decide its best route without hazardous moves. The moves are then bolstered into the actuators which handle controlling, throttle, and braking. At a particular time, if any function fails to perform, it causes major risk to the user as well as the surroundings.

Introduction of these cars has many drawbacks to it, the most basic one being elimination of many jobs in the transportation sector. This could have a negative impact on the unemployment rate and the economy (Auto Insurance Centre, 2018).

Self-driving cars can be hacked similarly to any other processing gadget. There is a plausibility of terror attacks where the oppressor could access a self-governing vehicle and utilize it as a weapon. Overwhelming precipitation meddles with the laser sensors and snow can cause disturbance in the camera view. Mishaps caused by such vehicles are additionally hard to examine as there is nobody particular to consider in charge of the harm.

Cars equipped with artificial intelligence work only on well-marked roads. Thus, unpaved roads with no on-road signals are dangerous. Paved roads too have faded paint, obscured signs and unusual intersections that will be an issue. Reading human behaviour such as hand signals is also a task for the developing technology. It’s an algorithmic nightmare to see cars sliding, swerving in and out and speeding up unexpectedly. While autonomous cars are constantly analysing the changes, they lack the basic emotional intelligence to understand what to do.

The increase in data and guidance provided to the newly developed technologies imposes a risk on humanity. A popular word—singularity—has been coined to describe the moment when machines become smarter, and maybe more powerful than humans. (Miller, 2018) The singularity is a point in the future, an event horizon of sorts, where humans no longer have control of technology. It will be under the control of a superior artificial intelligence. (Techopedia, 2018)

Can Augmented Reality and Architecture come together?

“I am thrilled about Augmented reality, because unlike virtual reality, it does not shut the world outside. Augmented reality allows the person to be present in the world and an advancement on what is presently happening.” (Tim Cook)

Augmented reality also known as AR, is interactive in nature and has a reality-based display environment that has the power of a computer generating display, sound, text and effects to improve the user’s experience in the real world. Comparing it to virtual reality, augmented reality does not replace the natural habitat like virtual reality does, instead it adds onto the simple real environment bringing the digital world into it. These advantages of AR lead to more and specific applications providing benefit to the users in entertainment, gaming, architecture, military training, engineering design, business improvements and navigation and tourism.

The biggest impacts of Augmented reality are on the Architecture and construction industries. It helps designers as well as architects know how their projects would appear on the sites. Since a lot of people have trouble visualising, AR has benefitted with the visualisation of a 2D object in 3D, in actual environment. An example is of the engineers and architects in Christchurch, New Zealand where an app called CityViewAR is used after an earthquake, to plan and rebuild the demolished buildings of real size throughout the city (Heimgartner, 2016).

Architectural software companies such as CAD (Computer-Aided-Design) and BIM (Building-Information-Modelling) have been welcoming AR in their software solutions. It uses augment reality software’s such as Autodesk, Bentley systems, Vectorworks and Sketchup which further includes smart reality, augment, pair, LORAR+ and view AR. AR is also considered as a design approach for interior designing. In a real-life environment, AR can be used to display virtual furniture, change wall colours and then modify it in real time on the screen. One can take a picture of their living room and bring in a variety of couches to see which one looks the best.

Today, Augmented Reality has been incorporated into many different aspects of our lives. It has also proven its benefits for the field of architecture, construction industries and BIM. The new uses for AR are still being developed and making the technology easier and far-reaching in terms of software, hardware and cost. Such AR innovations help in bringing architecture forward. In reality, the advancement of the Augmented Reality technology is heading in the direction to revolutionize and better the way we live.

Why Liberal Arts…

Our world today, as all of us know, runs more on ‘information’, than on anything else. Technological innovations have brought us closer more than ever. Contribution of Indians, especially in recent times, in the advancement of technologies, and thereby in the formation of the contemporary world has extensively been celebrated. We have always taken pride in our technocrats who have played a major role in building this information age. Our technological institutes, whether public or private, have been an unceasing source of manpower to feed global information needs.

However, having said that, there seems to be a dearth of technocrats who have been torchbearers or pioneers in their respective fields. Most of them seem to have imprisoned themselves in the role of mere service providers, wherein their primary function seems to be limited to supply inexpensive labour and have been excluded from innovation-oriented tasks. The primary reason for this state of affairs is our contemporary education system.

At the core of it all exists our education system which has primarily been engaged in delivering “specialists”, in training “masters”, at the cost of limiting one’s orientation to particular, narrow domains. As a consequence, we have managed to manufacture academically monolithic individuals who function in their own niches with the supposed claim of expertise or specialisation, owing to which they not only lack the integrated and humanistic approach but they also happened to be myopic in comprehending the socio-economic structure of the world around them.

Per say there is nothing wrong in being specialists; rather the requirement of experts or specialists was the peculiar demand of modernity, which itself had emerged out of industrialisation. Industrialisation required more and more specialised labour force in order to increase the overall production. Consequently, the purpose of the education sector was absolutely identified with producing the labour force requisite for industries to function.

In effect, adoption of a similar model of specialisation in the whole education sector globally and especially in India resulted in the neglect of social sciences and humanities. The stereotypical characterisation of these academic fields led them to not be adequately credited in creation of the specialised labour force. Neglecting social sciences and Humanities obviously came at a price of loss of….attitudes….within the general task force, particularly, student population!!

Under the garb of specialisation, we in India somehow went on to create and foster academic conservatism, wherein our students are unable to think “out of the box” and choose not to venture beyond their comfort zones.. However, today’s India calls for personnel exhibiting academic liberalism with a demonstrated eagerness to experiment and engage with the immediate surroundings. There has been a growing need to flourish as a society which is both integrated, diverse and serves as an enriched habitat.

Liberal arts education at Jyoti Dalal School of Liberal Arts, NMIMS intends to train such individuals, individuals who are not only generalists, and academically liberal but perhaps they are in true sense specialists for they redefine the given category to mean jacks of all besides being masters of one, and if possible more than one. We believe that the liberal arts education here holds a great promise to develop a mindset which seeks harmony in different knowledge fields without diluting their substance. It is an education which prepares students with the intellectual abilities and societal capacities to contribute to and be successful in a globally engaged milieu.

Is advertising the right career choice for you?

Career crossroads feel impossible to figure out in this current day and age, there are simply too many options out there! Making the right choice, finding what you love and enjoy doing and actually going ahead and pursuing it, seems like a tough job. There are compromises everywhere when it comes to deciding what you do.

A helpful tip to navigate your way through this is taking the time out to know your skills and what you’re actually good at and researching the industry where this skill or talent would come to be useful and help you flourish in your career and positioning yourself in that industry to help you further develop a clearer picture as to what it is you really want to do.

An interesting field to consider would be the world of Advertising. Advertising is the art of conveying a message to the masses. Advertisements generally try to draw attention towards a particular issue or product. Advertising is a lucrative and promising career in the years to come considering the rise in the amount of new businesses and startups that require their brands and services to be marketed to the masses as well as social media becoming another medium in itself for promotions and marketing. Advertising has a lot of career paths such as Copywriting, Public relations, Marketing, Social media marketing, Editorials, Film. So it’s perfect for someone who likes to do a bit of everything media related and is highly creative.

Advertising is a career that requires a lot of spontaneity and witty, creative thinking. You must have a knack for getting through to people and making your product/service or advertisement unique enough to stand out from the rest. One must be constantly thinking out of the box and coming up with new ideas no one has thought of yet. It’s a highly demanding field that’ll require you to be quick on your feet all the time. It’s also highly fulfilling and will give you the opportunity to work with interesting, and unique types of people that you wouldn’t know of or have the chance of working with otherwise.

At the end of the day, anything you put your mind to is possible. Is a career in advertising one of those things? It absolutely can be if you want it to. However, to do well in this, it takes a small amount of bravery, bravery to take risks with your ad, to speak the truth with your ad, to make it whacky, unique or original enough to stand out forever. It requires enthusiastic, creative thinkers and a highly hardworking person. If you feel that all said above fits you, your skills and interests, and everything you want from a career, It’s the best career for you, with the best job prospects, opportunities and a bright scope for the future.

If you enjoy being home by 7 p.m. to eat with your family every night and join your friends every Saturday for fun, then Advertising is NOT for you.

Advertising professionals are required to put in a lot of days and nights that seem to run together. You’ll probably even have last-minute changes that come up, and your whole schedule has to be cleared on a moment’s notice.

Also it is not an industry for people who cannot take criticism. Not every idea you have is going to be well-received. Your work will pass in front of many eyes before the ad campaign is released and will undergo many changes.

Reah Ma’am often tells us,” You may have written your best copy yet, but you’re asked to start over and do it again. You have to handle criticism very well. Don’t take offense if you are asked to make changes to your work. Basically, Thick skin is recommended.”

So, if you want to have a career in Advertising, ask yourself these questions:

  1. How good are you with stress?
  2. Can you work under tight deadlines?
  3. Can you handle getting calls in the middle of the night, from irritated creative directors or clients?
  4. Can you work in a team, whether you get along with your team members or not?

If your answers are positive, NMIMS School of Branding and Advertising is perfect for you, because you will be thrown into the big ocean and required to swim and survive here. I am Zaie and trying to stay afloat.

Why divergent thinking is necessary for a successful advertiser

A good advertiser knows his or her audience. An even better advertiser is one who comes up with a unique and interesting way to market the brand or service. A way which is disruptive, piercing and stands out the most with the essence of the brand message clear as crystal. This requires a specific way of thinking, a divergent, out of the box thinking that’s capable of coming up with something original every time.

Divergent thinking enables us to think of multiple other ways to do one thing, it trains us to come up with things on the spot, and makes anything we do stand out. It’s an absolute game changer if you work in advertising as it equips you to be prepared with absolutely anything. Divergent thinking in advertising also helps you adapt to the changing times and trends of the season and produce content accordingly that would fit in perfectly to relate to or amuse the target audience.

One of the worst pieces of advice I hear people give students is to “not have fun in class.” There’s this fear that smiling, goofing off, having fun, or cracking a joke will send a message to students that learning is not Serious. Students will act crazy. Chaos will ensue. Desks will fly. Trash cans will burn. You get the idea…

But I found the opposite to be true. Humour, goofiness, joy, fun — these were actually vital to developing a creative classroom culture. We experience Divergent Thinking in most of our classes and we are thoroughly engaged through activities, games and a very different approach to learning.

Perhaps Divergent Thinking is a lot like looking at the world through a kaleidoscope.

That’s the same thing we do during our strategic activities basically the divergent thinking tasks. We look at a common element of our world that everyone else sees, but we utilize those elements in a way that wasn’t thought of before.

I remember when we did our project for Creative Land Asia, it was a wonderful experience, we had to find unusual, non-obvious solutions to a problem. So we had to focus on divergent thinking, and suggest solutions which were original and Non-stereotypical.

According to me Divergent Thinking is very important to the advertising Industry. I will always remember how our professor kept on emphasising the importance of dismissing your first idea or approach. The aim being, to force you to push your creativity further and explore all possible solutions to a problem. While the rule seems very simple it was an effective technique to increase your creative output and the likelihood of finding a better solution to a problem.

And last but certainly not the least, the most obvious advantage to it is that it simply helps an advertiser produce good work. All the best advertisements of the world are memorable for one reason, is that they stand out from the rest in some way, what makes them truly iconic is their ability to completely disrupt the norm and start something new, be it an idea, a trend or a joke.
